Monthly makes: August 2021
I thought it would be so much fun to look back each month to see what I made, did I finish projects, did I start another project (WIP)? Just to give a short recap of the month. It would be great if I could inspire people to make something, but it's also a great opportunity for myself to read this back in a few months or maybe even years to see what I made, to read back on the creative proces and my thoughts.
This month, I didn't do as much sewing as I was planning to. Because we went on a hunt to buy a house! In February of this year we returned home after living abroad for 4 years and we temporarily moved in with my parents. While we are very thankful for this option, it was time to start the search for our own place and this took up a lot of time, so less time for sewing and quilting.
This summer Deveney from Het Naaldbos hosted a second finish feestje, a 'finishing party'. It's a social media "party", in which you post a list of goals you want to work on over the summer, for example finishes you want to achieve, or WIP's you want to finish, a certain amount of blocks you want to work on, etc. We post on Instagram and there is a Facebook group in which we keep track of our finishes and it really keeps me motivated to work on my WIP's. This time I also made a list, but decided to call it my wish-list, because at the beginning of July I had no idea how the summer would go so rather to make a wish-list and be happy with each finish, then to make a goal and feel bad about not finishing. As expected I didn't finish my whole list, but definitely made some great progress and will definitely join again next time!
I finished 4 shirts for my mum, which she absolutely loves and also finished handquilting and binding several projects. This month I was also very lucky to be able to test another pattern for Shannon, from Shannon Fraser Designs. She is an amazing modern quilter from Canada and earlier this year I got the pleasure to test and make her Lunar Eclipse quilt in beautiful blues and greens of which I will post a picture below. This month I'm testing her new pattern: Etched Diamond pillow, which will be available in the beginning of September, I went for a Christmas theme and will post more once the pattern is out.
For the last few months I have been trying to sew my way through a lot of my scraps, with quilting, but also my scraps that come from garment sewing. I'm writing several blocks about my process for Threadwerk, so hop on over to her blog to see what I made with my scraps earlier this year. I also worked an a very cute basket with scraps I got from another member of the Dutch modern quilt gilde. The challenge was to use as much scraps as possible of a bag of 100 grams of scraps another member would send you to make a quilting project. After you are finished you fill up the bag of scraps so it's 100 grams again and you sent it to the next person. I was of to a very good start, but got stuck in the middle and had to do a bit of a sprint in the end to get it finished. A blog about this project will be on the website of the Dutch MQG soon.
I also worked on some blocks for the new book Irene from Sugaridoo that will be available later this year. Since it's a secret I can't show any pictures yet. And finally i finished my projects with 100 hexies that I made during 100 days with Maranelle from Sewfoxymama who hosted this great project via Instagram earlier this year. It was a lot of work, all 100 hexies are sewn on by hand, then the wall hanging is quilted by hand and finished with handsewing on the binding.
And the last thing I've picked up again after neglecting it for over a year is my macramé wallhanging. I'm hoping to finish it in september.
Love, Sanne
